History
Area, Production and Productivity of cotton in India and
Madhya Pradesh
- Cotton is major commercial crop in the world and is being grown in
an extent of 338.15 L.ha of which India’s share is 89.00 L.ha (26.31%).
- Madhya Pradesh stands 9th rank in cotton area and productivity
in India. The production share of MP is 3.5 % with 6.35L ha of area.
- The area under cotton in the state had shown with a steep decrease
in last few years due to lower productivity and shifted farmers towards
soybean crop.
- Considerably number of varieties and hybrids were evolved both by
public agencies and the private sector. The popular among them are Jawahar
Kapas –4, Vikram, Khandwa –2, JKHY 1, JKHY 2, JKHY 3,H 4, H 8,H10, Jawahar,
Tapti, etc.
