Cotton situation in Maharashtra
- More than 1/3rd of the cotton area of the country is concentrated
in Maharashtra. It had 3 distinct cotton regions i.e. Vidarbha with
assured rainfall between 700 to 1100mm covering 16.4 lakh hectares under
cotton. Marathwada has somewhat erratic rains and lower rainfall than
Vidarbha. It has 10.7 lakh hectares of cotton while central and western
Maharashtra has much lower area of 5.3 lakh hectares. Most of the lighter
and medium deep soils in Central and Western Maharashtra have irrigated
cotton while deep heavy black soils are rainfed.
- Nearly 97 per cent of the cotton area in Maharashtra is rainfed and
therefore the productivity is largely depend on weather situation –
especially the amount and distribution pattern of rainfall, time of
arrival of monsoon rains and when the monsoon season would be over.
Therefore, there are lots of fluctuations in the productivity.
- Data of cotton productivity over the last 40 years would reveal extremely
dominant effect of rainfall on cotton crop. From a mere 30-kg lint per
hectare in 1970-71 (Maharashtra State) it rose to 179 kg/ha during 1996-97
and again declined to 134 kg/ha in 2000-2001.
- Inspite of such wide fluctuations in yields, farmers have very little
choice for any other alternate crops. Jowar, soyabean, pulses and groundnut
have all been tried but cotton remains a favourite cash crop with the
farmers in rainfed situations.
