History

Cotton is an important kharif crop of the Punjab State. Before 1970s long duration varieties such as LSS - 3208, H - 14 used to be grown in the entire north including Punjab. With the advent of Bikanere Nerma in the late sixty and beginning of 70s all the old long duration disappeared and early maturing Bikanere Nerma and its selection followed by wheat become the dominant cropping pattern of the region. Area under Desi cotton also was reduced. Lately hybrids also are cultivated.
